Polished concrete flooring is famously low maintenance, but
here are some tips to help keep your floor beautiful for years to

come.

  • Keep the floor free from dirt and grime with occasional sweeping with a soft dust-mop or shop vac.

  • Remove spills as soon as possible by spot cleaning the area. Warm water is typically all that is needed.

  • For heavier mopping use a pH-neutral non-caustic cleaner.

  • Using walk off mats will help reduce the amount of dirt and grime that ends up on your polished floor.

  • AVOID citrus or vinegar-based cleaners, as they can degloss the finish of the floor.

  • AVOID soap-based cleaners, as they can cause streaks.

  • AVOID harsh chemicals such as Comet.

  • AVOID abrasive cleaning aids such as steel wool.

Polished Concrete Process

Surface preparation is the first step in any concrete treatment. For instance, while there is an initial polishing with low-grit diamond tooling equipment, if there are unsightly imperfections, improper original pouring, or simply a poor quality pour on the base concrete slab, we may need to apply a special polishable overlay at the outset.

Next, we use our industrial concrete grinders to run diamond embedded tooling over the concrete to reveal a clean and fresh concrete surface. This step, known as grinding, is followed-up with honing, during which we continue using our grinders with finer grit diamond tools to smooth the previously ground surface.

After this, we apply a liquid densifier that chemically reacts with the concrete to harden it, making the surface denser and more stain resistant, and preventing dusting. This step increases the hardness of the concrete by up to 50%.

Then, we again use our grinders to make multiple passes with high-grit diamond pads to make the concrete smooth and reflective to light. Different grit diamonds are used to create different levels of gloss, depending on the final appearance we are trying to achieve. For a large space, we're happy to grind a sample of smaller areas on your floor so you can determine the exact level of shine you wish to see in the entire finished product.

Although the step of sealing/adding guard is technically optional, this step provides extra protection against stains, oils, and moisture and is highly recommended in spaces with a lot of indoor/outdoor foot traffic, such as in a large retail store.

Finally, we perform high speed burnishing, during which we use a high-speed industrial burnisher with a fine abrasive pad to do a final buffing to add just that extra bit of shine.

The Polished Concrete Difference
